Tell the UK Government to End the Destruction of Our Marine Havens

What you need to know

Bottom trawling is one of the world’s most destructive types of fishing. Weighted nets — which can weigh tonnes — are dragged along the ocean floor, devastating marine habitats and hoovering up everything from sharks to starfish.

Just like bulldozing a forest destroys vital habitat that has taken centuries to grow, bottom trawling decimates the seabed in a single motion, emptying our seas of life.

Despite this, it is permitted in almost all UK marine ‘protected’ areas.

Campaign goals

We're calling on UK Environment Secretary Steve Reed to take action. He has the power to:

Safeguard marine protected areas

Strengthen existing marine protected areas by banning destructive activities.

Restore marine wildlife

Allow marine wildlife to rebound and thrive in meaningfully protected areas.

Hold leaders accountable

Deliver on the UK Government's marine conservation commitments.

Bottom trawling is a destructive fishing practice that drags heavy nets across the ocean floor · Greenpeace
Dragged nets crush, tear up, and entangle delicate reefs, destroying natural habitats
The nets can accidentally trap turtles, dolphins, and other marine life, leaving them to die · Greenpeace
Bottom trawling gear is responsible for 93% of reported discards in the EU (1 million tonnes between 2015-2019) · Greenpeace
Low-impact fishing is more sustainable, but bottom trawlers exploit and deplete fish stocks, leaving little for local fishers

Why your voice matters

By raising our voices together, we can demonstrate public demand for immediate action to protect the ocean. Your support is critical in safeguarding marine wildlife, supporting coastal communities, and ensuring thriving UK seas for future generations.

What happens next

Your message will go directly to UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed. By taking this quick action, you're helping to put pressure on the UK government to stop destructive fishing harming our seas ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in June.
