What you need to know
Bottom trawling is one of the world’s most destructive types of fishing. Weighted nets — which can weigh tonnes — are dragged along the ocean floor, devastating marine habitats and hoovering up everything from sharks to starfish.
Just like bulldozing a forest destroys vital habitat that has taken centuries to grow, bottom trawling decimates the seabed in a single motion, emptying our seas of life.
Despite this, it is permitted in almost all UK marine ‘protected’ areas.
